Who gets to undo an agent's change?

Recovery consumes authority and operator attention.

Current state, intervening writes, cost and deadline.

My rule: Recovery is part of the automation's unit economics.

Full written post / accessibility read

A partial service move may need a forward fix, a compensating action or customer communication. None is merely an internal cleanup step when routes, capacity and billing are involved.

Define who can approve each branch, what target evidence is required, and when the customer should hear about it. A compensation may not restore the exact prior state and can itself fail.

On an unknown effect, gather the action journal and fresh target readbacks. Show the latest customer intent and the likely impact of each option. Keep the agent within the chosen scope.

Before scaling agent-executed changes, assign an owner and budget for forward repair, compensation and customer handling. Do that because the cheapest automatic attempt can create the most expensive uncertain effect.

Four-beat scene transcript

1. Who gets to undo an agent's change?

A partial service move may need a forward fix, a compensating action or customer communication. None is merely an internal cleanup step when routes, capacity and billing are involved.

Visual: The rollback can have a second customer cost.

2. Price uncertainty honestly.

Define who can approve each branch, what target evidence is required, and when the customer should hear about it. A compensation may not restore the exact prior state and can itself fail.

Visual: Recovery consumes authority and operator attention.

3. Give the operator a decision packet.

On an unknown effect, gather the action journal and fresh target readbacks. Show the latest customer intent and the likely impact of each option. Keep the agent within the chosen scope.

Visual: Current state, intervening writes, cost and deadline.

4. Fund the path back.

Before scaling agent-executed changes, assign an owner and budget for forward repair, compensation and customer handling. Do that because the cheapest automatic attempt can create the most expensive uncertain effect.

Visual: Recovery is part of the automation's unit economics.
