The plant manager accepts the AI draft. The missing fault can make the window expensive. Track whole change time and physical surprises. #EricFieldNotes
Full written post / accessibility read
In a fictional plant review, an AI assistant generates clear PLC documentation, code and test candidates. The manager likes the speed. The next question is who signs the behavior, who owns the fault model and who authorizes the physical change window.
The normal cycle passes in simulation. A stuck-high sensor or delayed drive response was not modeled. If discovered at the machine, the team may stop the change and rebook commissioning. The risk is not a junior syntax mistake; it is an unowned physical acceptance question.
The manager can approve AI-assisted drafting while requiring owner-signed states, offline fault probes, a disconnected controller bench, a qualified commissioning procedure and a ready rollback. Any required safety function stays in its engineered lifecycle.
Measure time to accepted machine behavior, specialist effort, commissioning duration and fault escapes. Do this because AI can genuinely help industrial engineering only when its faster drafts do not turn into slower or riskier plant changes.

Visual: They do not give it the line.
2. A compile green badge cannot book downtime.

3. Put conditions on the approval.
The manager can approve AI-assisted drafting while requiring owner-signed states, offline fault probes, a disconnected controller bench, a qualified commissioning procedure and a ready rollback. Any required safety function stays in its engineered lifecycle.
Visual: Signed requirement, isolated proof, rollback and readback.
4. Speed only counts after acceptance.
Measure time to accepted machine behavior, specialist effort, commissioning duration and fault escapes. Do this because AI can genuinely help industrial engineering only when its faster drafts do not turn into slower or riskier plant changes.
