Buy physical acceptance evidence.

An access control is not a hazard control.

Fault cases, artifacts, authority and downtime terms.

My rule: The complete process is the ROI unit.

Full written post / accessibility read

An industrial AI vendor may show faster code drafting, generated tests and clean documentation. A buyer should ask what qualified evidence reaches the commissioning gate: signed requirements, controller target, modeled faults, isolated bench trace, site authority and physical readback.

The assistant's access path needs OT cybersecurity treatment under a framework such as ISA/IEC 62443. A required safety function needs the applicable machinery or process-safety lifecycle, selected by the site's hazard analysis. One procurement checkbox cannot close both.

Require a traceable change packet: signed state table, target and I/O map, simulation assumptions, fault results, bench result, authorized commissioning plan, stop and rollback criteria, and installed-system observation. Price specialist review and change windows instead of hiding them after the pilot.

Evaluate vendors on time and cost from requirement to accepted physical behavior, including late faults and recovery. Do this because drafting efficiency is valuable only when the plant gets a defensible change without transferring uncertainty to operators.

Four-beat scene transcript

1. Buy physical acceptance evidence.

An industrial AI vendor may show faster code drafting, generated tests and clean documentation. A buyer should ask what qualified evidence reaches the commissioning gate: signed requirements, controller target, modeled faults, isolated bench trace, site authority and physical readback.

Visual: AI automation proposals need more than a speed claim.

2. Security and safety cannot be merged.

The assistant's access path needs OT cybersecurity treatment under a framework such as ISA/IEC 62443. A required safety function needs the applicable machinery or process-safety lifecycle, selected by the site's hazard analysis. One procurement checkbox cannot close both.

Visual: An access control is not a hazard control.

3. Put acceptance in the statement of work.

Require a traceable change packet: signed state table, target and I/O map, simulation assumptions, fault results, bench result, authorized commissioning plan, stop and rollback criteria, and installed-system observation. Price specialist review and change windows instead of hiding them after the pilot.

Visual: Fault cases, artifacts, authority and downtime terms.

4. Count accepted engineering time.

Evaluate vendors on time and cost from requirement to accepted physical behavior, including late faults and recovery. Do this because drafting efficiency is valuable only when the plant gets a defensible change without transferring uncertainty to operators.

Visual: The complete process is the ROI unit.

Research and claim limits

The examples identified as illustrative or simulated are design probes, not reported incidents. Vendor specifications do not establish workload performance.
