Full written post / accessibility read

An AI engineering assistant may propose normal-control logic and summarize tests. A required safety function follows a separately specified and validated lifecycle chosen for the machine and hazard. The assistant's fluent output cannot silently become that protection.

ISA/IEC 62443 addresses industrial cybersecurity. Machinery safety-related control may fall under ISO 13849 or IEC 62061; process safety systems may involve ISA/IEC 61511. A secure change path helps, but it does not prove the physical protection function is sufficient.

For a fictional conveyor, keep the AI-drafted jam response in a review branch. The relevant safety owner identifies hazards and required protective functions. Offline and isolated-bench tests challenge the candidate; controlled commissioning observes the installed response.

Use AI to surface cases and document evidence, but retain independent safety requirements, change authority and validation. Do this because the same text that makes an assistant helpful cannot carry the engineering and physical burden of a safety function.

Four-beat scene transcript

1. Show where advice ends and safety begins.

An AI engineering assistant may propose normal-control logic and summarize tests. A required safety function follows a separately specified and validated lifecycle chosen for the machine and hazard. The assistant's fluent output cannot silently become that protection.

Visual: An AI suggestion has no safety-function authority.

2. Cybersecurity and functional safety differ.

ISA/IEC 62443 addresses industrial cybersecurity. Machinery safety-related control may fall under ISO 13849 or IEC 62061; process safety systems may involve ISA/IEC 61511. A secure change path helps, but it does not prove the physical protection function is sufficient.

Visual: A protected network is not a safe stop.

3. Draw an authority boundary.

For a fictional conveyor, keep the AI-drafted jam response in a review branch. The relevant safety owner identifies hazards and required protective functions. Offline and isolated-bench tests challenge the candidate; controlled commissioning observes the installed response.

Visual: Advisor proposes; qualified owner specifies and validates.

4. Never promote a chat result into protection.

Use AI to surface cases and document evidence, but retain independent safety requirements, change authority and validation. Do this because the same text that makes an assistant helpful cannot carry the engineering and physical burden of a safety function.

Visual: Require the engineered lifecycle and physical acceptance.

Research and claim limits

The examples identified as illustrative or simulated are design probes, not reported incidents. Vendor specifications do not establish workload performance.
